Jewellery Care

The Art of Jewellery Care

Keep your favourite pieces sparkling for years to come.

There is something rather special about jewellery that becomes part of your everyday life. The ring you never take off, the necklace you reach for without thinking, or the earrings worn for every special occasion — over time, these pieces become more than jewellery; they become part of your story. With a little care and attention, you can keep them looking their very best for years to come.

The golden rule: jewellery goes on last

Perfume, hairspray, moisturiser, sunscreen and makeup can all leave a film on your jewellery and gradually dull its brilliance. Our favourite rule is simple: beauty products first, jewellery last. Allow creams and perfumes to settle before putting on your favourite pieces.

Know when to take it off

Although diamonds are incredibly durable, the metal and settings they sit in still need protecting. We recommend removing your jewellery before showering, swimming, exercising, cleaning or doing anything particularly hands-on. Chlorine, salt water, household chemicals and excessive moisture can affect metals and may weaken or damage delicate settings over time.

A little tip: Keep a small jewellery dish beside your bed or in your bathroom. It gives your pieces a safe place to rest rather than leaving them on sinks, bedside tables or — even worse — in the pocket of a pair of jeans!

A few simple habits can make all the difference between jewellery that simply sparkles today and jewellery that continues to tell your story for years to come.

Give your diamonds a little sparkle

Diamonds naturally attract oils from your skin, which can gradually make them appear less brilliant. For a gentle at-home clean, use warm water with a small amount of mild washing-up liquid and carefully clean the piece with a very soft-bristled brush.

Storage matters

Jewellery should have a home of its own. Store pieces separately wherever possible to prevent chains tangling and gemstones or precious metals scratching one another. Soft-lined jewellery boxes, individual pouches or compartments are ideal.

The pieces you wear most

Everyday jewellery naturally experiences more wear than occasional pieces. Take a moment every few weeks to look closely at your rings, earrings and bracelets. Check that stones appear secure and that clasps, claws and settings haven't become loose.

Professional care

For engagement rings and other pieces worn every day, we also recommend a professional clean and inspection from time to time. A professional can safely clean areas that are difficult to reach at home and check the condition of the setting.

What to avoid

Avoid bleach, abrasive cleaners, toothpaste and other harsh household products. They may seem like quick fixes, but they can scratch or damage jewellery and its finishes.

And finally…

Jewellery is made to be worn, enjoyed and lived in. Don't be afraid to wear your favourite pieces — just give them the same care you would give anything precious. A few simple habits can make all the difference between jewellery that simply sparkles today and jewellery that continues to tell your story for years to come.

Cheshire Clarity Tip

When in doubt, take it off. A few minutes without your jewellery is always better than risking damage that could have been avoided.
